PRESS RELEASE

Philips Lighting Malaysia brings light to Kampung Sapit, Sarawak with Engineers Without Borders – Malaysia (EWB-M)

EWB-M is delighted to announce that Philips Lighting Malaysia has generously donated 250 LED light bulbs to enable the villagers of Kampung Sapit to have safe and quality lighting in their homes. This donation amounts to 4 light bulbs per home and will help the villagers continue with household activities and allow their children to study after dark.

EWB-M is proud and grateful that Philips, a global leader in lighting innovation, has chosen to support this project with Kampung Sapit. Together, we aim to improve the quality of life of the villagers in a sustainable and responsible manner. That the bulbs are 85% energy saving is particularly useful since the mini-hydro generator can only supply a finite amount of power, so the reduced energy consumption allows the villagers to operate more appliances with the same energy.

Given that many villagers engage in small-scale farming for their livelihoods, these light bulbs also reduce the financial burden of attempting to install lighting in their homes. The up to 15-year life of the bulbs also ensures that they will not have to be replaced as frequently as standard bulbs.

EWB-M and Philips are confident that this project can effect a positive and lasting change to the community of Kampung Sapit. For more information about this collaboration, please contact Philips’ Sustainability Division or email contact@ewb-malaysia.org.
